Five people were discovered dead following a house explosion in western Pennsylvania. The explosion destroyed three structures and caused damage to around a dozen others. The incident occurred in Plum Borough, approximately 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. Plum Borough Police Chief Lanny Conley confirmed that the bodies of four adults and one adolescent were recovered after the blast, which took place at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The news of the tragedy has brought sadness to the entire community and region. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald expressed his condolences, stating, “This is certainly a sad, sad day and a sad time, for not just the folks in Plum but all the folks in the community and in this region.”
Emergency services were quick to respond to the incident. Of the three individuals who were taken to hospitals, two have been released, while one remains in critical condition. Additionally, fifty-seven firefighters were treated at the scene for minor issues.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to provide further information about the deceased victims. Chief Conley urged the public to respect the families affected and give them space to cope with the tragedy.
Reports indicated that people were trapped under debris following the explosion. One house was completely leveled, and two others were engulfed in flames. Firefighters from at least 18 departments worked tirelessly to extinguish the fires, receiving assistance from water tankers from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.
The cause of the explosion is now under investigation. The county fire marshal’s office, along with local law enforcement, will conduct a comprehensive investigation that will involve extensive forensic testing. They anticipate the investigation to be a slow and lengthy process, potentially lasting months or even years.
Michael Huwar, president of Peoples Gas, assured that their system was functioning as intended, as checks for gas leaks had been conducted underground and in the air. As a precaution, gas and electric services were shut off. However, officials have already formulated a plan to restore service, with electric power expected to be reinstated to most residences.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his support for the affected families, stating that he and the first lady are praying for them. He reassured them that they would have the government’s full support during the rebuilding process.
